The Program
On Monday, February 19th at 4:00 pm the fetivities begin!

The Basel Carnival kicks off at 4:00 am on the Monday following Ash Wednesday. As the fourth chime of St Martin's church echoes, the inner city plunges into darkness. With the drum majors' command of "Morgestraich: vorwärts, marsch!", the alleys and streets burst to life with the notes of hundreds of piccolos and drums. Every clique joins in with the Morgestraich, an exclusively traditional and archaic marching tune reserved for this unique occasion.

Amidst the blackened streets, the only illumination emanates from countless lanterns accompanying pipers and drummers, casting a warm glow on the faces of spectators.

Points of interest:  Barfüsserplatz, Marktplatz, Rümelinsplatz, Falknerstrasse, and Freie Strasse become bustling focal points during the Morgenstreich. If you prefer a more serene experience, you can also savor the Morgenstreich on Leonhardskirchplatz, Martinskirchplatz, Nadelberg, or Münsterplatz, among other charming locations.

Grand Carnival Monday and Wednesday Parades known as the Cortège on February 19th and 21st, 2024

1:30 to 6:00 p.m

More than 10,000 enthusiastic carnival participants showcase their themes through formations of various sizes. Unlike the morning festivities, the Cortège sees the participation of all traditional groups.  Cliques and Guggenmusik bands parade through the city center along the designated route.

 Floats

Gugge bands (brass bands featuring percussion and brass instruments)

Ainzelmasgge (individual costumed participants)

Large and small cliques (all carnival groups)

Chaisen (carriages)

Some formations reveal their themes from a distance, displayed on large lanterns leading the procession. The subject is further portrayed and complemented by masks, costumes, and props. Pipers, drum majors, and tambourines typically follow behind the front cortege and lantern.

On Carnival Tuesday, visitors can admire some of the impressive large floats and props in the barracks area.

  • Identify a visible meeting point and share it with your children.  In case of losing each-other in the crowd, you all know one place where you can meet.
  • Write your phone number on a piece of paper for your children to carry in their pocket or a small bag.
  • It always helped me to dress my children identically when they were little so that they are easier to spot among of crowd of various costumes.
